Context
Better Collective (later in text BC), is a global sports media company, that has grown significantly since its start in 2006. It now operates over 2,000 brands in more than 30 languages and countries. Key brands include HLTV, Action Network, Playmaker HQ, and FUTBIN, with FUTBIN attracting over 100 million monthly web visits.
The goal of my project
As mentioned, BC operates in many countries and many of them are crucial for its success. When I was employed we were a small team of 3 (now we are 4, yay!) and doing research had its many challenges, one of the biggest being – how to get research participants on site. This was solved with offering incentives, but the new challenge was doing this in a compliant and fast way.
Since we operate in many countries, it was very slow to go through compliance assessment for each market. Therefore my goal was to find a scalable setup for giving incentives for user participation across most important markets, and to document this for other colleagues.
Process and outcomes:
- Determining our priority markets by talking to different market and brand owners
- Checking if they have similar compliance laws for incentivised research by talking with the legal and compliance team
- Checking tax regulations and determining relevant gift cards across priority markets through cooperation with finance and compliance teams
- Creating templates for terms and conditions/privacy policies through cooperating with corporate legal team
- Testing on the Brazilian market and then using it regularly on new projects
- Documenting the process so the rest of the team can use it

My feelings about this project
When I started working as a researcher, this type of project was not what I had in mind. But I actually found myself really good at it, and I enjoyed communicating with all the different people across teams. Above all, I enjoyed that I made my life and the life of my team so much easier from then on, and that it helped us all do research and deliver results faster. 🙌
